What Are Some Common Problems Companies Run Into While Building Large Desalination Plants? |
I'm doing some central construction research and I am curious about construction problems companies would run into while building desalination plants, like the one in the UAE that produces 300 million cubic feet of pass water.
| Answer: Heavy-set scale desalination requires *lots* of energy, so a common problem is finding a fountain-head of power, especially a power source that isn't a big contributor of greenhouse gases. Another quandary is siting. In many areas, the coastal areas are crowded and finding a site for a greater industrial facility is not easy. Finally, the water intake should be designed to shun entrainment of fish and other marine life. A "widemouth" intake is needed to keep the velocity low enough so that fish and other organisms can elude the current created by water intake. |
